'Shoot at sight' ordered in Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, Shiv Vihar

Fresh incidents of violence were reported from the national capital on Tuesday, a day after five people, including a police constable, were killed during clashes between pro and anti-CAA groups in several parts of northeast Delhi. As of Tuesday evening, 13 people have lost their lives during the clashes.


Delhi Police on Tuesday (February 25) issued ‘shoot at sight’ orders in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, and Shiv Vihar areas in view of communal clashes that claimed at least 13 lives since Monday, said sources.

This comes in the wake of fresh incidents of violence in the northeast region of the national capital that witnessed rioting and arson in the last two days with frenzied mobs resorting to vandalism and stone pelting.

Earlier in the day, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in several parts of the city. Subsequently, curfew was also imposed in Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Karawal Nagar.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah held three review meetings in less than 24 hours with the last one lasting for almost three hours. Delhi Police and Home Ministry officials were present in the last meeting, said ANI quoting MHA sources.

Eight deaths were reported until reports last came in on Tuesday, taking the toll to 13. Of these, at least 11 deaths were confirmed by GTB Hospital authorities.

At least 35 injured people were taken to the GTB hospital on Tuesday, besides which, several others were being treated at various hospitals. Sunil Kumar, medical superintendent of GTB Hospital, said at least 50 per cent of those injured have sustained bullet injuries.

Meanwhile, the police conducted flag march in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura and Khajuri Khas on Tuesday after the areas witnessed arson and stone pelting. A battery shop was set on fire in Bhajanpura. The shop was vandalised and burnt batteries were strewn on the road.

Rakesh Kumar, a local, said the incident took place at around 3.30 pm. “We do not know how the situation escalated. We are worried about our safety. My family is scared after seeing such a thing near our house,” he said.

Special Commissioners of Police Satish Golcha and Praveer Ranjan led the flag march. “We are taking appropriate actions. The required force is being used. Tear gas and mild lathicharge has been used to control the crowd,” said Golcha.

“The stone pelting has currently stopped in the area. We will be here till the situation comes under control. If required, we will deploy extra force,” he added.

Meanwhile, SN Shrivastava, IPS, was on Tuesday appointed as Special Commissioner (Law and Order) of Delhi Police, with immediate effect.
