19-year-old female boxer raped multiple times by coach during Kolkata trip

A 19-year-old female boxer was raped multiple times by her coach, who was taking his students to Kolkata to have them represent Haryana in a national boxing competition, Harendra Singh, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Railways (DCP) said.

The coach, who was identified as Sandeep Malik (28), has been arrested by the Delhi police and booked under charges of rape and molestation. He ran a boxing academy at Sonepat named ‘Sandeep Malim Boxing Academy’, according to the police.

Malik was taking his students to Kolkata to have his students participate in the ‘Third Bengal Boxing Classic 2020’, which is scheduled to take place between February 29 and March 3.

The DCP said the coach had repeatedly molested her on the train to Kolkata first and then at their place of stay for at least four days.

“They were travelling in the Duronto Express train from Delhi to Kolkata. The first time the coach raped the woman was inside the train while it was leaving from Delhi on February 27,” said DCP.

The survivor, who lived in west Delhi, filed a complaint at a police station in Delhi. The DCP said, “The woman was medically examined and her statement recorded in front of her magistrate in court where she reaffirmed her allegations.”

Police said Malik had confessed to the crime and that he did not know that the teenager had filed a complaint.

The coach is married and has two children.

The DCP said they did not question the other students at the academy for similar incidents since that might have alerted the coach and led to his escape. He added that they will investigate further to find out whether there have been similar incidents in the past.
