Ambubachi Mela 2022 ends: Assam’s Kamakhya temple door reopens


After a gap of four days, the main door of Maa Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hills in Guwahati opened for devotees on Sunday morning (June 26) as the Ambubachi Mela 2022 concluded.

The Ambubachi Mela or Ambubachi Festival was held after a gap of two years. It was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic and this year too the mela was organised with strict guidelines issued by Kamrup Metropolitan District, Guwahati.

The district administration had set up three camps for the devotees visiting Kamakhya Temple.

Kamakhya Temple in Assam is one of the 51 Shakti peethas. During the annual Ambubachi Festival the deity at the shrine is believed to undergo her annual menstrual cycle.

As the four-day mela on the temple premises, held during the period, came to a close, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple opened for the resumption of public worshipping.

Devotees and Hindu monks from across the country who throng the temple during this period waited in long queues for offering prayers to the goddess.

Authorities have stopped making provisions for VIP passes for visitors for the time being to enable all devotees to visit Kamakhya Temple, officials said.

On Sunday, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi and his wife offered prayers at the temple.

“I along with the First Lady offered our prayers & obeisance to Maa #Kamakhya at the culmination of pious #AmbubachiMela. We prayed for the contentment & welfare of people of the State. May the divine blessings of Maa bring peace, prosperity & happiness in everyone’s life,” he tweeted with pictures.

On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Kamakhya Temple.  “Visited Maa Kamakhya Mandir after the nibriti of Ambubachi and prayed to Devi for peace, harmony and welfare of everyone,” he tweeted.
