India captain Virat Kohli broke another record as he crossed the 12,000 runs milestone in One Day Internationals during the third game of the series against Australia in Canberra on Wednesday (December 2).

The 32-year-old Kohli has become the quickest to score 12,000 ODI runs, erasing the previous record held by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs in 463 matches). While Tendulkar took 300 visits to the crease to reach the milestone, Kohli has done it in 242 innings. Kohli is also the fastest to 10,000 and 11,000 runs milestones.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Manuka Oval, Kohli started the game needing 23 runs to the landmark. He arrived at the crease early, in the sixth over, after the dismissal of opener Shikhar Dhawan, and achieved the feat in the 13th over with a single off fast bowler Sean Abbott.

Overall, Kohli is the sixth batsman to the milestone in ODI cricket, and second Indian after Tendulkar. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting of Australia, Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene are the other members in the elite club.

Kohli scored his 60th ODI and was dismissed for 63 off 78 by paceman Josh Hazlewood in the 32nd over after Australia reviewed a caught behind decision which was not given out by the on-field umpire.

Since making his debut in 2008, Kohli has become one of the best batsmen across formats. He has 43 ODI tons, second most in the format, after Tendulkar’s 49, and averages more than 59 in 251 matches.
