Sushant death: SC order for CBI probe ‘vindicates’ Bihar govt, kin hail it

The Supreme Court’s green signal for a CBI inquiry into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput on Wednesday (August 19) has brought relief to his family and fans alike while “vindicating” the stand of the Bihar government and the state police.

Sushant’s father KK Singh’s lawyer called the order a “victory” for the entire family.

“The SC ruled on all points in our favour. The court also clearly said that FIR registered at Patna was correct…the family is very happy with the verdict,” he was quoted as saying.

The apex court while handing over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) ruled that Mumbai police had limited investigation powers into the case as it had registered only an accidental death report. The Bihar police, on the other hand, had filed a “full-fledged FIR” which can be referred to the CBI, the court said. The top court also instructed Mumbai police to assist CBI in the case.

“Thank you God! You have answered our prayers! But it is just the beginning…the first step towards the truth! Full faith on CBI,” tweeted Sushant’s sister Swetha Singh Kirti soon after the court pronounced its verdict.

Niraj Singh Babloo, BJP MLA and a cousin of Sushant thanked the court’s order on behalf of the family.

“Our family thanks the Supreme Court, and all those who were a part of this movement for justice. Now, we are certain that Sushant will get justice,” ANI quoted him as saying.

Actors like Akshay Kumar and Kangana Ranaut hailed the court’s decision while hoping for an impartial inquiry.

“The Supreme Court verdict makes it clear that the probe by Bihar Police and FIR registered here were correct. Not just Sushant Singh Rajput‘s family or people of Bihar, the entire country is concerned over the matter. With CBI probe, people can trust there’ll be justice,” ANI quoted Bihar CM Nitish Kumar as saying.

Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted that the apex court’s decision has vindicated the stand of the Bihar government.

“I am very happy. The Supreme Court’s order has strengthened the trust people have in the court and has assured the nation that justice will be delivered in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case,” Bihar Director General of Police Gupteshwar Pandey was quoted as saying.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, hoped that the CBI will bring the culprits to justice within a stipulated time frame.

The apex court gave the order acting on a petition filed by the actor’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, who had prayed to merge a case filed in this regard with Bihar Police with the original case being handled by Mumbai police. Sushant’s father who had filed the FIR with Patna Police had accused Rhea of abetting his son’s suicide, while also pointing to her role behind the alleged siphoning of at least ₹15 crore from his bank account. The ED is probing the latter.

Thirty-four-year-old Sushant was found hanging at his Bandra residence on June 14. While his death was dubbed suicide by Mumbai police, his fans and fellow actors in the industry have suspected it to be a murder and have been demanding for a CBI inquiry.
