Shaheen Bagh shooter linked to AAP, say police; party terms it 'dirty politics'

The Delhi crime branch on Tuesday (February 4) reportedly found that Kapil Gurjar, who opened fire in Shaheen Bagh area on February 1, had links with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Crime branch officials said they found certain pictures on the mobile phone of Gujjar. In these pictures, Kapil can be seen with AAP leaders such as Atishi and Sanjay Singh.

According to ANI, Kapil can be seen joining the AAP a year ago, in pictures which were recovered from his phone. Kapil had joined AAP along with his father and several others.

Rajesh Deo, DCP Crime Branch, said, “In our initial investigation, we found some photos from Kapil’s phone that establish what he has already disclosed that he and his father joined AAP a year ago. Kapil has confessed that he and his father joined AAP somewhere between January-February 2019.”

Denying charges, Sanjay Singh, Rajya Sabha MP of the AAP, said, “Amit Shah is the Home Minister of the country at this time. Now just before elections, photos and conspiracies will be found. 3-4 days are left for the elections, BJP will do as much dirty politics as they can. What does having a picture with someone mean?”

Earlier this week, Gujjar opened fire at protesters at southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area where protests are being held against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). A court sent him to two-day police custody on Sunday (February 2).

This was the second shooting incident reported in Delhi in a week. A man had fired from a pistol on a group of anti-CAA protesters in Jamia Nagar on January 30, injuring a student of the Jamia Millia Islamia University.
