Supreme Court to hear bail plea of Priyanka Sharma on Tuesday

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the bail plea of BJP youth wing worker, Priyanka Sharma, on May 14 (Tuesday). Sharma, the Howrah District Club Convenor of BJJM, was arrested by the TMC government in West Bengal for allegedly posting a morphed picture of the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Currently under 14 days police custody, she has been accused of posting an image of Mamata’s face photo-shopped on Priyanka Chopra’s Met Gala look on her Facebook account.

The TMC government’s action of arresting Priyanka drew flak on the social media. People described the arrest as hypocrisy and an attack on freedom of speech. BJP too hit out at Mamata by calling it a “shameful” act.

Priyanka’s mother told ANI, “My daughter was arrested because she worked for the BJP. Had she been a TMC worker nothing would have happened to her. This is all done by TMC.”

In 2011 too, the Mamata Banerjee government came under fire for a similar action. Then, the TMC dispensation arrested Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra for sharing a cartoon on the TMC.

Recently too, a movie that was critical of Mamata was withdrawn from theatres and got re-released after the intervention of the Supreme Court.
