Smriti Irani protesting the LPG price hike in 2011

A throwback picture tweeted by Rahul Gandhi on (February 13) took a dig at the BJP over the LPG cylinder price hike.

He tweeted an old picture of Smriti Irani along with BJP workers protesting an increase in prices of cooking gas during the UPA-era and demanded a rollback. The Union Textile Minister was seen protesting vigorously on the street with a gas cylinder.

The picture was tweeted with the caption,”I agree with these members of the BJP as they protest the astronomical 150 Rs price hike in LPG cylinders” along with the hashtag #RollBackHike.

On Wednesday (February 12) the price of cooking gas LPG was hiked by a steep ₹144.5 per cylinder due to spurt in benchmark global rates of the fuel. LPG which was priced at ₹714 earlier was hiked to ₹858.50 per 14.2 kg according to a notification by state-run oil marketing companies.

In Kolkata, LPG cylinder prices were hiked by 149 to 896, in Mumbai by 145 to 829.5 and in Chennai by 147 to 881.

This is the steepest hike in rates since January 2014 when prices had gone up by ₹220 per cylinder to ₹1,241.

The picture tweeted by Rahul dates back to June 2011 when the BJP was up in arms against Manmohan Singh led government’s decision to hike LPG prices by ₹50. Netizens were quick to dig up Irani’s old tweets condemning petrol price hike and called her out on the hypocrisy of being mute over the current situation.

The Congress on Wednesday had accused the Modi government of “electrocuting” the budget of the common man by raising the price of domestic cooking gas and demanded its immediate rollback.
