Indore hits a four, emerges as cleanest Indian city again

Indore in Madhya Pradesh has again emerged as the cleanest city in India, taking the top spot in the annual ‘Swachh Survekshan’ results for the fourth year in a row in five years since the survey started.

Surat in Gujarat is the second-cleanest city with a population of more than a lakh; Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra came third.

Vijaywada was the top-ranked city from south India, taking the fourth place in the national rankings. Ahmedabad in Gujarat came fifth.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the results of the ‘Swachh Survekshan 2020’ survey during an online programme, ‘Swachh Mahotsav’ conducted by his ministry on Thursday.

This year, the results of the survey, done over 28 days, were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. About 1.9 crore people in 4,242 cities of the country took part in the survey.

“Indore is India’s cleanest city 4th year in a row. The city & its people have shown exemplary dedication towards cleanliness. Congratulations to MP CM @ChouhanShivraj people, political leadership & Municipal Corporation for this superlative performance,” Puri said in a tweet.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan congratulated the people of Indore. “The city has hit a four this time and surely will hit a six,” he said.

Chhattisgarh was declared the cleanest state for the second year, while Jharkhand was ranked first among states with less than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Varanasi was named the ‘best Ganga town’ among 92 towns.

The all-India survey ranks places based on sanitation, waste management and cleanliness.

According to the 2020 survey, New Delhi Municipal Council is the best capital city while Ahmedabad is the cleanest mega city.

The first Swachh Survekshan survey was conducted in 2016 in which Mysuru took the top spot for the cleanest city.
