Nationwide outage stalls Zomato, Swiggy services for 30 minutes

Technical glitches prevented people for a brief period of time from booking food orders on Zomato and Swiggy on Wednesday (April 6).

The half-an-hour nationwide outage created quite a buzz on social media as people complained about their inability to book orders. The snag was probably a result of trouble with the Amazon Web Services that many online platforms use.

Customer support teams of Zomato and Swiggy responded to customers’ calls by calling it a “temporary glitch”.

Swiggy Twitter handle put a message: “…we are facing a temporary technical glitch. Please be assured that our best minds are working on the issue at the moment to get the issue resolved at the earliest. Please bear with us till then.”

The Zomato Twitter handle also wrote, “Hi there, we are facing a temporary glitch. Please be assured our team is working on this and we will be up and running soon.”

Meanwhile, Zomato and Swiggy are under scrutiny of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for allegedly violating platform neutrality, data masking and charging exorbitant commissions from restaurants.

The CCI has ordered probe against Bundl Technologies Pvt Ltd, which runs Swiggy and Zomato Ltd, the owner of Zomato app, following a complaint from the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) in July 2021.

NRAI, which represents over 50,000 restaurants all over the country, complained that the online food platforms have violated the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002.
