The Mumbai police have summed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has been accused by an actress of sexual assault in 2013, on Thursday (October 1).

A news agency reported that the filmmaker has been told to appear at Versova police station at 11 am.

In a statement, Kashyap’s lawyer has called the charges ‘baseless’. “My client has been deeply pained by the false allegations of sexual misconduct that have recently surfaced against him. These allegations are completely false, malicious and dishonest,” said lawyer Priyanka Khimani in a statement.

The actor, who had filed a rape case against Kashyap last week, on Tuesday met Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari, demanding action against the filmmaker. She was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale. The two had also met Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangare Patil earlier in the week, seeking security for the actor.

The actor had earlier said the police were delaying the arrest of Kashyap, warning that she would go on a hunger strike if no action was taken.

“Had the accused been a poor man, like a rickshaw driver or any one, the police would have immediately beaten him and arrested him. But in this case they have not moved an inch. Why have they not even called him to the police station to take his statement?” asked the actor’s lawyer.

The actress, through her lawyer, has also demanded protection alleging that she has not been able to step out of her house in fear. She said she “felt threatened by Kashyap and his lobby”.

The Mumbai Police had registered an FIR against Anurag after the actor accused him of sexual misconduct in 2013, an official said. The FIR was registered at Versova police station on September 22 after the actor, along with her lawyer Nitin Satpute, approached the police.

The FIR was registered under Indian Penal Code Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 342 (wrongful confinement), an official said, adding that further investigation is underway.

In her police complaint, the actor alleged that Kashyap raped her at a place on Yari Road in Versova in 2013.
