Demonetisation aimed at destroying informal sector: Rahul Gandhi

The hidden agenda behind the 2016 demonetisation was to harm the informal sector that runs on liquid cash, said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a video on Twitter on Thursday.

The hidden agenda behind the 2016 demonetisation was to harm the informal sector that runs on liquid cash, said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a video on Twitter on Thursday (September 3).

The demonetisation that scrapped ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, was an “attack on Indian poor, farmers, workers and small shop owners,” Gandhi further said in his latest criticism of the Modi government.

He said the “hidden agenda” was to “clear the ground”, i.e. to suck out liquid cash from the unorganised sector’s economy.

“Our informal sector runs on cash. Small shopkeepers, farmers, workers rely on cash. The second target of demonetisation was to take out money from the informal sector. The prime minister had himself told the nation that he wants a cashless India,” he said.

“If India goes cashless, small shopkeepers, farmers, and workers will be finished,” the Congress leader added.
