Arvind Kejriwal, Amit Shah discuss rising COVID-19 cases in Delhi

In the backdrop of increasing COVID-19 cases in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation in detail. Kejriwal tweeted saying that the Home Minister assured of all cooperation.

The meeting comes after Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal, on Monday (June 8), overruled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s decision to reserve hospitals, except those run by the centre, only for the residents of Delhi. The state government’s decision to test only those people showing symptoms of COVID-19 was also overruled, allowing the asymptomatic cases patients to also be tested.

Meanwhile, with an average of as many as 1,250 COVID-19 cases everyday, Delhi reported 10,000 cases in just eight days, starting from June 1. This is a sharp spike from the 79 days the national capital took to reach the 10,000 mark, an analysis of data provided by the city government revealed. On Wednesday (June 10), Delhi witnessed 1,501 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to over 32,000. The death toll due to the infection is over 984, so far.

Delhi took 13 days for the tally to progress from 10,000 to 20,000. By May 18, it reported a total of 10,054 cases at an average of almost 127 cases of coronavirus everyday. On June 3, Delhi reported the highest single-day spike in positive cases at 1,513.

Amid the surge in cases, the Delhi government has stated that the current doubling rate of the infection in the city was 14 days. So by this estimation, it will see more than 56,000 cases in the next two weeks. By the mid of July, the cases will explode to 5.5 lakh.

In an online briefing on Wednesday (June 10), Arvind Kejriwal said Delhi will require 1.5 lakh beds in the healthcare facilities by July 31, once people start coming to the city for COVID-19 treatment from the other states.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain also said today (June 10) that there is ‘community transmission’ but only the Central government can declare if it is so.  His remarks come one day after Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia said that the Centre has said there is ‘no community transmission’ of the coronavirus infection in the national capital.
