One year deadline to implement one nation, one ration card: Centre

The Centre has given states and Union Territories time till June 30, 2020 to roll out the one nation, one ration card system, under which beneficiaries can buy subsidised foodgrains from ration shops in any part of the country. Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said already 10 states — Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana and Tripura — are providing portability of Public Distribution System (PDS) entitlements.

Alwar lynching: Ashok Gehlot says Pehlu Khan not named in chargesheet

Two years ago, dairy farmer Pehlu Khan was lynched by cow vigilantes for allegedly transporting cattle without permission in Rajasthan. Now, the state police have filed a chargesheet against him posthumously and his two sons, Irsad (25) and Arif (22). After the chargesheet caused an uproar, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot rejected the report and tweeted, “Name of Late #PehluKhan is not there in the chargesheet submitted by #Rajasthan Police in December 2018.”

BJP MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, who assaulted civic official, gets bail

BJP MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, son of party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, was on Saturday (June 29) granted bail by a special court here in two cases related to assaulting a municipal official in Indore with a cricket bat. Additional Sessions Judge Suresh Singh, special judge for cases against MPs and MLAs, granted bail to Akash, who was arrested on Wednesday on charges of assault and leading a protest without permission. District prosecution officer Rajendra Upadhaya said that the court asked the MLA to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 50,000 in the case of assault and Rs 20,000 in the other case.

Video shows water dripping in Statue of Unity, officials blame high-speed wind

Tourists at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Narmada district had to wade through a pool of puddle as water leaked through cracks of the monument’s viewing gallery. Videos circulating on the social media showed water dripping from the roof of the gallery at the world’s tallest Statue of Unity on Saturday (June 29). Opened last October, the statue was built at a cost of ₹3,000 crore.

15 killed in wall collapse in Pune as heavy showers hit Maharashtra

At least 15 people, including four children, were killed when a portion of the compound wall of a housing society collapsed on shanties adjacent to it in Kondhwa, Pune, in the early hours of Saturday (June 29). The shanties were set up for labourers working in a nearby construction site. A fire brigade official said incessant rains might have led to the collapse of the wall. Pune received 73.1 millimetres of rain on Friday, the second-highest rainfall in June since 2010. According to the police, a portion of the 12 to 15-feet-high wall collapsed between 1.30 and 1.45 am.

Sports Minister announces increase in diet budget of all athletes to bring parity

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday announced that the diet budget of the SAI trainees, senior and junior athletes will be increased to bring parity. Earlier, the diet budget for SAI trainees, junior athletes and senior athletes was ₹250, ₹480 and ₹690, respectively but the Rijiju has decided to make the amounts equal. Speaking about his decision, Rijiju said, “While having my meal at the athletes mess (at the National Institute of Sports) in Patiala, I noticed that senior and junior athletes and SAI trainees have different diets since the food budget for each section is different.

PM Narendra Modi hardsells Yoga at G20 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday used the G20 Summit here to promote India’s traditional healing measures, Yoga and his flagship Ayushman Bharat health scheme. Modi, who was in Osaka, Japan for the two-day G20 Summit, also took part in a special session on empowerment of women. The session witnessed an in-depth dialogue on how to further women empowerment and work towards gender equality.
