Rains, floods devastate 4 states; over 170 dead, 10 lakh displaced

Heavy rain-induced floods and landslides continued to affect lakhs of people in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat as the death toll climbed to 174 as on Sunday (August 11) and pushed over 10 lakh to seek shelter in relief camps across these states. The Army, Navy, Coast Guard, NDRF, police force, volunteers and fishermen are involved in the rescue operation in various places.

TMC sees plot to divide Bengal after Amit Shah says Gorkhaland in letter

The mention of Gorkhaland by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a letter to Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, who had sought protection for Gorkhas in the national capital, has kicked up a row, with West Bengal’s ruling TMC seeing in it a “plot” to divide the state. The BJP, which has emerged as a major political force in the state after the Lok Sabha polls, however, rejected the charge as “baseless”.
