COVID-19 cases pass 3 lakh mark in India; death toll rises to 8,498


India crossed the 3 lakh mark in the total number of COVID-19 cases on Friday (June 12) and stood fourth in the list of countries worst hit by the pandemic.

While Maharashtra has the maximum number of 1,01,141 cases among states, it is followed by Tamil Nadu with 40,698 and Delhi with 34,687 cases. Maharashtra witnessed  3,493 new cases on June 12.

The country’s death toll has also increased to 8,498 with the highest single-day spike of 396 fatalities. More than 70 per cent of the deaths had occurred due to comorbidities.

As of 8 am on June 12, India had 1,41,842 active cases of COVID-19, while 1,47,195 people had been cured or discharged from hospitals, according to the data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

So far, India has tested 52,13,140 samples, of which Tamil Nadu accounted for 6,55,675 tests. While Maharashtra has conducted 6,10,790 tests, the national capital has tested 2,71,516 samples.
