Ambiguity prevails on documents needed for NRC

An official explainer issued said a person’s citizenship can be proven by submitting any document that verifies his/her date and place of birth. However, it also said that a final decision hasn’t been taken yet on what the acceptable documents related to his/her birth are.

“This is likely to include voter cards, passports, Aadhaar, licences, insurance papers, birth certificates, school leaving certificates, documents relating to land or home or other similar documents issued by government officials. The list is likely to include more documents so that no Indian citizen has to suffer unnecessarily,” it said.
