External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed grief at the killing of a 21-year old Indian student in Toronto, Canada, who succumbed to his injuries after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Kartik Vasudev, from Uttar Pradesh.

As per reports, he was shot at the Glen Road entrance of Sherbourne Subway Station in Toronto. Kartik was a victim of homicide, the police said.

The Toronto Police Service said that on the evening of April 7, police responded to a radio call at a local subway station for a shooting.

“The man received medical attention from an off-duty paramedic. The man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” Toronto Police said in a news release.

“Investigators would like to speak to any witnesses that were in the area at the time, as well as any drivers or businesses that have camera footage,” they added.

He was a student at Seneca College. “The Seneca community is saddened to hear of the tragic death of Kartik Vasudev, a first-semester Marketing Management student,” the college tweeted.

Jitesh Vasudev, the victim’s father, said, “We last spoke to Kartik on Thursday and he told us he was heading to work. He was a student but worked part-time at a Mexican restaurant. For several hours, his phone was switched off. His cousin, whom he stayed with, grew worried and informed the police. News flashed that a shooting had taken place and it was then that she realised Kartik is no more.”

On Twitter, Vasudev’s cousin, who lives in India, said the family still doesn’t know what happened. “My cousin brother Kartik Vasudev was shot dead at a subway station in Torronto yesterday. We still don’t know what happened. Torronto police has not told us anything. (sic),” he wrote.

Jaishankar said in a tweet, “Grieved by this tragic incident. Deepest condolences to the family.”

The Consulate General of India in Toronto tweeted, “We are shocked and distressed at the unfortunate killing of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in a shooting incident in Toronto on Thursday.”

“We are in touch with the family and will provide all possible assistance in early repatriation of mortal remains,” the Consulate General further said.
