President gives assent to triple talaq bill
President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to the triple talaq bill passed by the Parliament, turning it into a law which makes the practice of instant divorce among Muslims a punishable offence, a government notification said. The gazette notification, published on Thursday (August 1), says that the president has given assent to the bill passed by the Parliament. While the Supreme Court, taking immediate stock of the Unnao rape case and the accident involving the survivor and her family on July 28, shifted all cases related to the incident to a Delhi court, the CBI too has swung into action and begun its preliminary investigations into the case.
The CBI team led by Superintendent of Police Raghvendra Vats, which surveyed the accident spot, after investigation has found that when the accident took place the car carrying the rape survivor and her family was moving at a speed of 100 kmph. On the other hand, the truck that hit the car was travelling at a speed of 70 to 80 kmph.
Former Maldivian VP detained in Tamil Nadu for illegally entering India
Former Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb was detained on Thursday by the Indian authorities for allegedly illegally entering the Tuticorin port in Tamil Nadu. Acting on a tip-off that a boat that went with nine people to Maldives returned with 10 people, the authorities stopped the boat that was on its way to the Tuticorin port. On interrogation, it was found that the additional person was Maldives former vice president Ahmed Adeeb.

Breaking traffic rules, not wearing a helmet or driving when drunk will now incur heavy penalties once the Centre’s new law for motor vehicles comes into force. The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (July 31) passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and charted out strict penalties for traffic violators. The upper house passed the bill with 108 votes in its favour and 13 against it, in response to three amendments moved by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The Bill aims to regulate traffic violations and bring a safer traffic environment for motorists and pedestrians. It will now require the President’s nod to become a law.
Cops seek undertaking from Zomato customer who cancelled order
The Jabalpur police in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday (August 01) sought an undertaking from Zomato customer and local resident Amit Shukla that he would not spread religious hatred. Shukla had tweeted about cancelling an order placed on Zomato, a food aggregator firm, as the person who was assigned for delivering his order was a ‘non-Hindu’. “We took suo motu (on their own) action against Shukla,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Singh told PTI.
Former PM Manmohan Singh may be nominated to RS from Rajasthan
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may be renominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress from Rajasthan, party sources said. The Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan fell vacant after the death of BJP leader Madan Lal Saini on June 24. He was elected to the Upper House last year. With the Congress in majority in Rajasthan, the party is likely to win the seat. The party, sources said, is actively considering nominating Singh for the lone seat and if elected, he will have a Rajya Sabha term up to April 3, 2024.
