20-year-old student drowns while shooting TikTok video in Karnataka


A 20-year-old government college student drowned after she slipped and fell into a farm pond while shooting a TikTok video in Karnataka’s Kolar district on Friday (June 12).

The deceased, Mala, was shooting the video alone and there was no one around to rescue her, said a report by The Indian Express quoting the police. The incident occurred in Vadagere taluk. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation is under way.

Earlier this week, a 24-year-old man drowned in a lake near Hyderabad while his cousin was shooting his TikTok video.

The incident took place on Tuesday (July 9), when Narasimhalu, the deceased, who couldn’t swim, was bathing in the lake along with his cousin Prasanth. Narasimhalu had moved deeper into the waters and realized something was wrong. Seeing this, his cousin ran out of the lake for help. His body was later pulled out by the locals, said police.

Meanwhile on Sunday, a RSS affiliate has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban TikTok and Helo (a social networking app), stating that the Chinese social media apps have become a hub of “anti-national” content.

Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) co-convener Ashwani Mahajan has written a letter to Modi, in which, he alleged that the platforms, with their vested interests, were trying to influence the Indian youth.

Few month earlier, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court had imposed a ban on TikTok, calling it “dangerous for children”. Later, the court decided to lift the ban.
