2 die, 4 hospitalised in gas leak at Vizag factory


Two workers died and four were hospitalised due to leakage of benzimidazole gas in a Visakhapatnam-based factory, ANI reported.

According to the report, the leakage was reported from Sainor Life Sciences Pvt Ltd.

The two killed were senior employees of the company, sources said. The injured persons have been admitted to a hospital in Gajuwaka, with one of them being put on ventilator support, they added.

“The situation is under control now. Two persons who died were workers and were present at the leakage site. Gas has not spread anywhere else,” ANI quoted Uday Kumar, an inspector with the Parwada Police Station, as saying.

District Collector V Vinay Chand and Police Commissioner R K Meena visited the company to take stock of the situation. The cause of the leak that took place in a reactor unit at the plant is yet to be established.

In a similar incident last month, 10 people were killed and as many as 200 hospitalised after inhaling styrene gas which leaked from the Gopalapatnam-based LG Polymer plant in Andhra Pradesh.
