India on Tuesday (October 8) got the first of the 36 aircrafts from France delivered at the Merignac airbase. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh received it on behalf of the country in a simple ceremony, in the presence of top officials. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Rajnath Singh hailed it as a new milestone in defence co-operation between the two countries.

Earlier, Rajnath Singh arrived at Bordeaux to receive the first of the 36 Rafale aircrafts. He was received by Dassault Aviation CEO Éric Trappier.

Prior to that, with the stated purpose of receiving the first Rafale combat aircraft besides taking the Indo-French defence ties to a new level, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh landed in France.

Prior to leaving for Merignac, Rajnath met the French President Emmanuel Macron. He is also expected to perform “Shastra Puja’ on the occasion of Dussehra and undertake a sortie in the aircraft.

On Wednesday, the defence minister is scheduled to hold the annual defence dialogue with the French Minister of Armed Forces and meet heads of the French defence industry.

In a tweet posted earlier in the day, Rajnath Singh said that he was looking forward to taking the Indo-French ties to a whole new level through his three-day visit.
