Rewind to the 50s, 60s and 70s for some dose of humour. A shift from the innuendos and slapstick comedy of today, here are some good old pure comedy flicks in Tamil that can make you laugh aloud, as you stay locked down to beat the COVID-19 challenge.
Some of these would be an eternal favourite for your grandparents, who possibly still remember the dialogues scene by scene.
Kasethan kadavulada (1972)
This comedy caper directed by Chitralaya Gopu is about a man who plots stealing money from his dominating stepmother by roping in his friend who masquerades as a godman. Starring Muthuraman, Thengai Sreenivasan and Manorama, the movie is known for its unparalleled comedy sequences and dialogues apart from the popular song Jambulingame Jadathara.

Kathalikka Neram Illai (1962)
Considered to be on the finest comedy flicks to be made till date in Tamil, the film is the story of two friends, who date the daughters of a rich industrialist. While one pretends to be a rich man’s son, the other disguises as his millionaire dad to impress the industrialist. The film stars TS Balaiah, Muthuraman, Ravichandran and Nagesh. Known for its songs, the film’s highlights also includes the scene starring Nagesh and Balaiah, where the latter, an aspiring filmmaker narrates a horror scene to him that leaves audiences in splits even today.

Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa (1970)
The movie is about four friends living together and the strange situations they encounter, as they wriggle out of each one of them in hilarious ways. The film starring Ravichandran, Kanchana and  Vijaya Chandrika is known for its music by MS Viswanathan and its dialogues.

Galatta Kalyanam (1968)
With a star-studded cast of Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalithaa, the film, a romantic comedy, is about a prospective suitor (played by Sivaji) who in order to marry his lady love (Jayalalithaa) has to find grooms for her sisters as well, as per the orders of her father. He summons his friend who helps him through the herculean task that only gets complicated, as he begins hunting for the grooms. The movie is known for the performances by the lead actors.

Missiamma (1955)
Touching upon social issues like freedom to worship and unemployment, the movie stars Gemini Ganesan and Savithri who pretend to be married in order to get the job in a school. There is also a great deal of suspense built along in the comedy that is also known for the hit song Brindavanamum Nandakumaranum
