Fighting all the way to the top
As a young college student, Mamata Banerjee joins the Congress Party in the state and serves in different posts within the party and in other local political groups.
She becomes general secretary of Mahila Congress in West Bengal and holds the post till 1980.
Mamata defeates Somnath Chatterjee, senior leader of CPM, from Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat. She becomes one of India’s youngest parliamentarians in West Bengal and also takes charge as the general secretary of the All India Youth Congress.
She becomes a member of the committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
She serves in various ministerial committees.
Banerjee loses her seat in an anti-Congress wave across India, serves PCC of WB.
Mamata becomes West Bengal’s Youth Congress’ President.
Wins election, becomes HRD, Youth Affairs minister.
Mamata is elected as a member of the 11th Lok Sabha for the third time.
She parts ways with Congress and forms All India Trinamool Congress and becomes its chairperson.
Fourth term as LS member. Heads panel on Railways.
Fifth term. Joins NDA govt, becomes railway minister.
Presents railway budget, introduces 19 new trains, many for Bengal.
After the Tehelka expose in 2001, she leaves cabinet and joins Congress during 2001 Bengal election.
Comes back to NDA for a short tenure as coal minister. Gets elected for sixth time to Lok Sabha.
In October 2005, she protests against land acquistion policy of West Bengal govt.
In 2006, Trinamool Congress takes a beating in Bengal assembly elections.
Joins UPA. Seventh time in LS. Railway minister.
In the West Bengal municipal elections, Trinamool wins the Kolkata Municipal Corporation with a margin of 62 seats.
Mamata wins full majority in West Bengal. Ends CPM's 34-year rule, resigns as MP.
Becomes WB CM again.
