DMK leaders use alliterative Tamil to explain away their changing stances
Though the DMK was formed to oust the then autocratic Congress party, the Dravidian party, led by CN Annadurai, extended its support to K Kamaraj of the Grand Old Party in the Gudiyatham by-election in 1954. The Dravidian leader extended the party’s support with the alliterative phrase: “Gunaala manaala kulakozhunthae, sendru va, gudiyatham vendru va (Kamaraj: man of character, son of Tamil clan. Go, win Gudiyatham to capture the fort).”
DMK leader Kalaingar Karunanidhi forgave Indira Gandhi’s emergency crimes and extended his support to her as the prime ministerial candidate with the alliterative phrase, “Nehruvin magale varuga, nilaiyana atchi tharuga (Come, Nehru's daughter. Give us a stable government).”
Even though Karunanidhi severed ties with the Congress after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in Chennai, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi sought his support to keep the NDA government out of power. Kalaingar welcomed her saying: “Indiravin marumagale varuga, Indiyavin thirumagale velga (Come, Indira's daughter-in-law. Let victory come your way, the daughter of India).”
Following in the footsteps of the Dravidian leader, DMK leader MK Stalin gave Congress president Rahul Gandhi his support for prime ministership, saying: “Rahul Gandhiyae varuga, nattuku nallatchiyai tharuga (Come Rahul Gandhi, give us good governance.)”
