Sumalatha Ambareesh, veteran actor and wife of late former Congress lawmaker MH Ambareesh, on March 18 announced that she would contest from Mandya parliamentary constituency in Karnataka as an independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In February, Sumalatha had made headlines for declaring that she would contest the Lok Sabha election from Mandya – a seat her husband had represented both as MP and MLA.

“Everybody I have met in Mandya have told me that the faith they had in him (Ambareesh), they will transfer to me,” she said at a press conference, apologising for hurting anyone for taking this decision. Sumalatha will take on Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy.
