COVID from Nizamuddin mosque event: What you need to know


National capital’s Nizamuddin area has been cordoned off by the Delhi Police after several cases of COVID-19 emerged in people who attended a religious congregation held in the area between March 1-15.

What we know so far-

1. The Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin markaz was attended by more than 2,000 delegates from Indonesia, Malaysia. Reports claim that many of the participants have travelled to different parts of India

2. As of now, 24 people who were part of religious gathering have been tested COVID-19 positive, Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain said. According to reports, 334 people have been sent to hospitals and over 700 others have been sent to a quarantine centres.

3. On Monday (March 30), the Telangana government revealed that six people who participated in the Nizamuddin event, have succumbed to the deadly virus. Ten more who returned to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have tested positive. This incident also spread to other states like Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Bihar and Odisha.

4. Over 100 people have undergone testing so far and the results are expected on Tuesday (March 31).

5. The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government ordered the Delhi Police to register a FIR against a maulana for violating quarantine protocols.

6. The mosque administration has dismissed all the allegations on Tuesday and said a large group of visitors were stuck at the markaz as the government suspended all passenger train operations across the country till March 31.

7. As on Tuesday, Delhi has a total of 87 coronavirus cases and the overall count in the country has touched 1,251. Top of Form
