India's COVID cases near 8-lakh mark; recovery rate climbs to 62.3%


The recovery rate of the country has increased to 62.38 per cent, even as the number of COVID-19 cases in India neared the 8-lakh mark on Thursday (July 09). As of 9 pm, the total number of positive cases in the country stood at 7,91,001, of which the number of active cases was 2,75,824, while 4,93,484 patients have recovered.

India saw 21,949 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. The country’s death toll too has increased to 21,592 with 448 fatalities on a single day. Kerala, Karnataka and West Bengal saw the biggest spike in infections for the second consecutive day, while the number of fresh cases in Tamil Nadu crossed the 4,000 mark after a gap of three days.

Maharashtra continues to top the state tally with 2,30,599 cases, as 6,875 new infections were reported on Thursday. As many as 219 patients died in the state, raising the toll to 9,667. While 4,067 patients were discharged from hospitals, there are 93,673 active cases in the state. So far, 12,22,487 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Maharashtra.

Fresh cases again breached the 4,000 mark in Tamil Nadu after a gap of three days and 65 deaths were reported on Thursday, taking the tally to 1,26,581 and the toll to 1,765. Though the states daily count of fresh cases soared to 4,231, the downtrend in the fresh infections in the state capital continued with the addition of only 1,216 cases.

Delhi recorded 2,187 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday taking the tally in the city to over 1.07 lakh, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,258. As many as 45 fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours. On June 23, the national capital had reported the highest single-day spike of 3,947 cases.

With COVID19 cases continuing to spiral, Kerala on Thursday recorded the biggest single-day spike of 339 infections, taking the count to 6,534, as Chief MinisterPinarayi Vijayan cautioned that the state was “very close” to the threat of community spread. As many as 149 people recovered on Thursday and 2,795 people are under treatment.

The total number of COVID-19 infections in Karnataka on Thursday breached the 30,000 mark as the state too reported its biggest single-day spike of over 2,200 new cases and 17 related fatalities, taking the death toll to 486. Out of the 2,228 fresh cases reported on Thursday, a whopping 1,373 were from Bengaluru Urban alone.

West Bengal on Thursday recorded 1,088 COVID-19 cases, its highest single-day spike in infections so far, pushing the tally to 25,911 while a record 27 fatalities in the last 24 hours raised the death toll to 854, the state health department said. Out of the new deaths, 24 were due to comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental.

Uttar Pradesh reported 17 more deaths and over 1,200 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, taking the states infection tally to 32,362. So far, 862 deaths have been reported in the state. The number of active cases has gone up to 10,373, while 21,127 have been discharged from hospitals after recovery.

Madhya Pradesh recorded 305 new COVID-19 cases, taking the count to 16,341 on Thursday, while five more patients succumbed to the infection. With five more people succumbing to the viral infection, the death toll went up to 634, they said. Of them, three died in Indore and one each in Bhopal and Alirajpur, the officials said.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 240 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of people infected with coronavirus to 9,501 while the death toll due to the infection reached 154 following the demise of five patients in the last 24 hours. “Five persons, who were COVID-19 positive, have died over the past 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir,” an official said.
