COVID infections soar in 5 states, but stay below 500 in 11 others


Even as COVID-19 cases continue to soar at an alarming pace in the country, 11 states and Union territories have managed to arrest the number of infections to the 500-mark limit with most of them having recorded no deaths so far, said a report in the Hindustan Times quoting government data.

The states and Union territories are Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Ladakh and Manipur.

The number of COVID-19 cases is just 35 in both the Union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. While two people have recovered, no deaths have been reported so far.

The north-eastern states so far have recoded a low rate of infections compared to the mainland. Meghalaya has reported 44 cases, one death and 22 recoveries, while Sikkim has 63 cases, four recoveries and no deaths. Arunachal Pradesh has reported 78 cases, and no deaths while four patients have recovered and been discharged.

Mizoram which has 107 cases too hasn’t reported any deaths thus far. However, only one person has recovered in the state.

Nagaland has 163 infections, 76 recoveries and no deaths.

The Union territory of Puducherry too has a minimal number of 176 cases. While it has two fatalities, 82 have recovered so far.

The islands of Andaman and Nicobar have reported 38 cases, 33 recoveries and no deaths, while the newly-carved out Union territory of Ladakh has recorded 437 cases and 68 deaths. Only one person has recovered from the disease so far.

In contrast, the states Maharashtra (1,04,568), Tamil Nadu (42,687), Delhi  (38,958), Gujarat (23,038) and Uttar Pradesh (13,118) have been seeing a steady rise in cases for the past few weeks. These five states alone account for 70 per cent of the total number of cases (3,20,922) in the country, the report said.

According to HT, the cities of Gurugram, Faridabad, Vadodara, Solapur and Guwahati are among the 15-most affected cities which have seen a 40-45 per cent rise in coronavirus cases in the past 10 days.
